Fostering saves lives!

Have you ever thought about fostering a dog or cat? Maybe you’ve seen a post about a furry face who just needs a temporary place to crash, or you’ve wondered what it’s like to help an animal get ready for their forever home. Fostering is one of the most rewarding ways to make a difference — and it’s something anyone in our Laurinburg and Scotland County community can do!

Who Can Foster?

Pretty much anyone in our community!

  • Apartment dwellers: Cats or smaller dogs are often a great fit.

  • Families: Fostering can teach kids about compassion and responsibility.

  • Retirees or work-from-home folks: You’re perfect for animals who need extra TLC or companionship.

All you need is love, patience, and a little time...

What Animals Need You Most?

While puppies and kittens melt hearts quickly, it’s often the adult dogs, shy cats, and mamas with babies who need foster homes the most. They’re the ones who truly blossom with a little peace, quiet, and kindness.

When We Need Fosters Most

We can use foster homes year-round, but especially:

  • In spring and summer, when kitten season is in full swing.

  • For animals recovering from illness or surgery.

  • During busy adoption events or emergencies, when space gets tight.

Where to Start

If you live in Laurinburg or Scotland County, we’d love to have you join our foster family! Stop by the shelter or send us a message to learn how to get started. We’ll provide the supplies, vet care, and support — you just bring the heart.

Why Fostering Matters

Every year, our Humane Society welcomes animals who just need a little extra care before they’re ready for adoption — newborn kittens too young for the shelter, shy pups who need a confidence boost, or pets recovering from surgery. When you open your home to foster, you’re giving them the space and love they need to thrive.

You’re also helping us open up room at the shelter so we can say “yes” to even more animals in need. Every foster home truly saves lives.

How it Works

Fostering doesn’t have to be complicated!

  1. Reach out to us. We’ll walk you through the simple steps and match you with an animal that fits your home and lifestyle.

  2. Prepare a cozy space. A spare room, bathroom, or quiet corner works perfectly — we’ll provide supplies and guidance.

  3. Give them time and love. Some animals jump right into your lap; others need a little time to warm up.

  4. Keep in touch. We’re here to support you every step of the way with check-ins, vet care, and advice.

Tips for a Great Foster Experience

Fostering is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have - it’s full of small moments that remind you how powerful love and patience can be. Whether it’s your first foster or your fifth, these simple tips can help you make the experience meaningful for both you and your furry guest:

Be Patient

Every foster animal has a story - some just need a quiet moment to remember what kindness feels like. Sit nearby, speak softly, and let them come to you. With a little patience, you’ll watch fear turn into trust right before your eyes.

Take Photos & Notes

Capture those small moments - the happy tail wags, sleepy purrs, or silly quirks that make them unique. Sharing those stories helps us show adopters the heart behind each face. You’re helping write the next chapter of their life.

Stick to a routine

Animals find peace in predictability. A steady routine - meals at the same time, familiar walks, gentle play - helps them feel safe and loved. Before long, they’ll know exactly when it’s “their time” with you.

Don’t worry about the goodbye

Letting go can tug at your heart... but remember, your love helped them heal and find home. That happy goodbye means your foster’s story has a joyful ending and opens your heart (and home) for the next life you’ll change!!

Fostering Changes Lives

Whether it’s a week, a month, or a season, you’ll be giving a homeless pet the love and comfort they deserve until their forever family comes along.
