Preparing for Your First Adoption

A Simple Checklist for
New Pet Parents . . .

Bringing home a new pet is one of the most exciting moments you’ll ever experience! Whether you’re adopting a playful kitten or a loyal dog, a little preparation goes a long way. To help you get ready, the Scotland County Humane Society has put together a simple checklist for first-time adopters — so you can focus on the fun part: welcoming your new best friend home!

Gather the Essentials

Before adoption day, make sure you have the basics ready to help your pet settle in comfortably. Having everything set up before they arrive helps reduce stress for both you and your new furry friend. Here's what you'll need!

Food and water bowls

Quality pet food

Collar, leash, and ID tag

Bedding, blankets, and a crate

Litter box and litter (for cat adopters)

Toys and treats

Prepare Your Home

Take a quick walk around your home to make it pet-safe:

  • Move cords, cleaning supplies, and small items out of reach.
  • Close off rooms or spaces that you don’t want your pet exploring quite yet.
  • Create a cozy area that’s all their own — somewhere quiet, warm, and welcoming.

A calm environment helps your pet adjust and feel secure in their new surroundings.

Schedule a Vet Visit

Even though our shelter pets receive veterinary care before adoption, it’s important to establish your own vet as soon as possible. They’ll help you stay on top of vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, and overall health — keeping your new companion happy and healthy for years to come.

Give Them Time to Adjust

Remember, your new pet may need a few days (or even weeks) to settle in. Go slow, keep routines consistent, and offer plenty of love and patience. With time and care, you’ll build trust — and that bond will be one of the most rewarding parts of adoption.
