How to Keep Your Pet Safe During the Holidays

Published on 13 November 2025 at 22:06

The holidays are a time for joy, family, and celebration — and that includes our furry family members! With twinkling lights, new visitors, festive treats, and lots of activity around the house, the season is full of excitement for pets and people alike. But all that hustle and bustle can also bring a few hidden dangers that even the most careful pet parents might not notice.

To help you keep tails wagging, whiskers safe, and your celebrations running smoothly, here are a few simple, pet-friendly tips from all of us at the Scotland County Humane Society.

Give the Gift of Love - From Our Shelter Family to Yours!

Looking for a meaningful gift this season? Consider adopting, fostering, or donating to help a local animal in need. Every act of kindness makes a difference — and helps more pets enjoy the holidays surrounded by love.

All of us at the Scotland County Humane Society wish you and your pets a safe, happy, and heartwarming holiday season. May your days be filled with joy, your nights cozy, and your pets always close by your side.

Keeping Pets Safe this Season!

From modest beginnings, we've grown through unwavering dedication and a commitment to continuous improvement. Each step has reinforced our core belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of integrity. We're passionate about what we do, and we're excited to share our story with you.

Watch Out for Dangerous Foods

Holiday feasts are delicious for us, but not always safe for pets. Keep these foods off your pet’s menu:

  • Chocolate and sweets containing xylitol (toxic to dogs and cats)
  • Turkey bones and fatty leftovers (can cause choking or illness)
  • Grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic (harmful to pets’ kidneys and digestion)

Instead, treat them to pet-safe snacks or a small portion of their favorite food so they feel included in the celebration!

Be Careful with Decorations

Sparkling lights and shiny ornaments can tempt curious paws and noses.

  • Keep ornaments, tinsel, and ribbons out of reach — they can cause choking or blockages if swallowed.
  • Secure your Christmas tree to prevent tipping.
  • Avoid using real tree water, which may contain fertilizer or bacteria that can make pets sick - use sugar water instead!

Create a Calm, Safe Space

Holiday gatherings can be overwhelming for pets, especially with extra noise, guests, and decorations. Set up a quiet, cozy spot with their bed, toys, and water so they have a place to retreat and relax. While you’re at it, keep an eye on festive hazards like candles and electrical cords — curious noses and wagging tails can easily get too close. Opt for battery-operated candles and use cord covers to keep everything merry, bright, and pet-safe.

Don’t Forget ID Tags and Microchips

With all the extra foot traffic during the holidays, it’s surprisingly easy for a door to be left open or a curious pet to slip outside unnoticed. Make sure your pet’s ID tags are updated and securely attached to their collar, and if they’re microchipped, take a moment to confirm that your contact information is current in the registry. These small steps can make all the difference in ensuring a fast, safe reunion if your furry friend wanders off during the holiday hustle and bustle.
